home made paper towel holder for your workbenchThis was the first week that we ran our weekly contest through the podcast. We’re going to try to run this weekly contest from here on out, but trying something a little different each week to keep it fresh and interesting for every type of modeler out there!

This past week we asked our listeners to call in or email us a modeling tip for entry to the contest and we received a bunch of great submissions. We appreciate all of your tips!

Ultimately we had to choose one winner, but Dan P. one of our many dedicated listeners submitted this tip:

Good morning, fine-scale freaks. It’s Dan from South Portland, Maine. And I’m just calling in with my modeling tip. Now, you may have seen this on Pinterest but I was inspired by my favorite barbecue joint Buck’s Naked BBQ. And what I did was I made a paper towel holder out of stainless steel pipe from the hardware store. All you need is half inch by 12 inch long double and threaded steel pipe a floor flange and a cap put it together and you got an instant paper towel holder that you can mount to your workbench or mount it to the wall. For a wall mount, all you need to do is add an elbow piece. That’s my tip of the week, keep on modeling!

We reached back out to dan and asked him to provide a little more info on his homemade paper towel holder and for some pics, so all of our followers could see his nifty work bech paper towel holder!

It was just too good of an idea, and one that is easy enough for anybody to attach to their workbench or have in their work area! We had to share it.

Here’s the material list for the Workbench Paper Towel Holder:

  • 1/2″ x 12″ threaded steel pipe ($4.98 @ Home Depot)
  • 1/2″ floor flange ($4.85 @ Home Depot)
  • 1/2″ cap ($1.68 @ Home Depot)
  • (optional) for wall mount add an elbow piece and a piece of 2” steel pipe to create an “L” shape

Total cost for the version Dan made… about $12 after sales tax. For an awesome workbench addition, you can’t beat it. And plus who wants to use some fancy paper towel holder from Bed Bath & Beyond for $25 when you can make one out of steel or black iron pipe?!?!

Assembly photos:

It’s really that simple! You can attach it to your bench or do like we did and keep it as a mobile paper towel holder, since the flange is heavy enough to keep it weighed down and upright on most flat work surfaces as you move around your layout.

Thanks for the awesome workbench tip Dan!

Make sure you all listen in to the end of this week’s podcast to hear the winner and for details on the next contest announcement! We’ll be giving away a HO Scale Customs Koozie & a small modeling supplies pack to the winner!

Happy modeling everyone!
