How to Paint Craftsman Model Walls with Sea Sponges2 min read

Model Painting with Sea Sponges

This is an easy and fast way to apply a peeling paint technique to your craftsman kit models!

For just a couple dollars (I’m talking probably under $5) with your “big box store coupon” you can pick up a pack of sea sponges for painting and apply a really cool peeling/chipping paint effect to your next craftsman model railroad structure.

This is obtained by painting the base layer with a wash or a stain of a natural wood or aged wood color. Something as simple as your India ink wash on the scale lumber of your structure is perfect and will create an awesome effect.

Once you have your base stain/wash applied you can take your sea sponge with the color of your choice for your wall color and begin to dab the paint onto the wall with the sponge. Starting with a more dry-brushed, lighter sponging to start with, then applying the paint with the sponge more and more with each layer, until you’ve achieved the desired effect.

It’s really a simple technique and while we’re definitely not the pioneers of this technique, it’s our favorite and one that almost every model railroader should try with their next kit.

More great techniques for walls

Here’s another detailed from James Diegnan where Doug Foscale of FOS Scale Models shows you even more awesome detailed ways to paint a wall, including painting and weathering walls with a sponge.

Have you done any painting of your model railroad structures this way? Let’s hear what you did for your builds in the past?
